Coming As You Are: How God Meets You Where You Are At When You Come to Him In Your Imperfection
In a church or support group setting, the words “Come as You Are” may emphasize being welcome to come dressed casually, without a need for fanciful clothing. But also as your natural self. No one is expecting you to be perfect, because they themselves are not.
In this world of high expectations it can be difficult to share who you really are; the good, the bad and the ugly – but God already knows you inside and out. He sees what has become of you and knows where you are at, because He has always been there. Waiting for you to make that huge step and come to Him. He isn’t far; He isn’t at the end of your agony or addiction. He will meet you right there in the midst of it all – and pull you out!
Coming as You Are
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me” (2 Corinthians 12:9). This, my friend, ought to be everyone’s motto. You recognize that you aren’t perfect, whether or not you have others fooled.
It’s time to stop pretending, keeping up the façade only keeps you stuck. Don’t be ashamed; don’t feel a need to “get yourself together” before you come to God. If you wait until that occurs, you will surely miss the boat to salvation. Instead, realize that you don’t have to get you together. God doesn’t expect you to come to Him perfect and problem free. His power is made perfect in your weakness, your imperfect. Let him show you what He can and will do in your life!
What to Bring When You Come
Just your pieces to exchange for His peace. You are broken, in one way or another, we all are. The world would like you to believe that you are impossible to repair or that you don’t need to make a change, or that you aren’t worth the all the work it might take.
God, however, wants you and all the baggage that has accumulated in your past and present. It is priceless to Him, because He who created us is the only one capable of piecing us back together, making repairs to our souls and making us completely whole. The problem with many earthly relationships is the expectations and trade- offs. If you come to someone and ask something of them, it is likely they will expect you to bring something to the table and they may not want what you have to give. It may not be enough for them.
God wants you just as you are and expects nothing of you other than that which you already have – yourself and the life you are living. He says “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).
Coming as You Are, Changing in Christ
When you come to God, and allow Him to come into your life, you are forever changed. If you continue to walk with Him and come to Him with everything, you will be transformed! Conformed in mind and heart with Christ!
If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new (2 Corinthians 5:17).
