Getting to Know God
Whether you are a newly born again or found your way back to God, these tips on getting to know him better will help you to grow spiritually and walk closer to your savior.
Receive Him and Begin a Relationship with Him
The first step in getting to know God is allowing him to come into your life! There is no particular prayer you must pray, your own words will suffice.
Tell him what you have been doing in your life, confess. Ask him to forgive you (and know that no matter what you’ve done, God can and does forgive you!). Declare that you believe with all your heart that he gave his only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross for your sins so that you may have eternal life - simply by believing.
Ask him to come into your life and transform you into the person he desires you to be. I guarantee you he will gladly accept, thus beginning the most important relationship you’ll ever have.
Join a Church
The church is the body of Christ, for he is the head and all who attend do so to worship him and be joined in salvation. Attending a church has many benefits, such as: worshipping and praising God amongst other believers, hearing and learning God’s Word so that it may be applied to your daily life, discovering ways to serve, and finding support in your Christian walk.
Find a bible teaching church in your area and attend it regularly. Doing so will feed your faith, and you will draw closer to God as you hear his Word and meet others who are at differing stages in their walk with Christ.
Read His Word
Though there are many books and authors within the bible, God is the true writer of each word. He orchestrated every story within it to be used as an example for us to learn from, be comforted by or take heed to. Don’t leave it up to Sunday’s teachings to hear his Word. Read it yourself, and do so daily. You may want to purchase a pocket bible so that you can carry it with you and read it as you get free moments.
A devotional and a where-to-find-it-in-the-bible index book are also helpful. As you go through a daily devotional or use a bible index book to reference a particular subject or hardship you are experiencing, you will find that all you need to make it through each day is right there in his Word.
Not only will you find advice on living your life within the pages of the bible, you’ll also learn more about God! His love, the depth of it. His free gift to us all, salvation through Jesus Christ. His very nature. You will learn it and you will fall deeper in love with your heavenly father with each word read.
Spend Time with God
It’s true, God is always with you. But you can ignore him if you chose. Every relationship takes two, and it’s up to you to make time for God. Personal time.
Set aside a time of day or night to sit -alone and in quiet- and communicate with God through prayer. Don’t simply lay out your wish list; bring every worry, struggle and praise to him in these moments. Study his Word, but first, ask him to show you what he wants you to see today.
Don’t just talk – listen! You speak to God verbally, or via your thoughts, and also through the actions you make. He communicates in more ways than you can imagine, but all speak to your heart.
Only God himself is all knowing. If you spent all of the years of your earthly life studying his Word, you would not know everything about him.
Just as a lifetime spent with your spouse doesn’t make you completely aware of their every move or why they do or think the way they do.
Still, you should strive to know him better each day. He desires you to seek him with all your heart and find him.
All you need to know of him in this life. Which is all that matters.
