Help His Word Be Heard: How You Can Support Missionaries and Spread God’s Word Around the World - Without Leaving Your Home
When we read a Christian magazine article on mission works we get about as close as most of us will ever come to the hardships that can come upon those who live for God and want to share their faith and spread his Word in parts of the world that aren’t as religiously educated.
We all are called to share the good news and witness, but few of us face much risk in doing so. There are some who are called though, to travel and be of service and spread the Word of God. Even if this isn’t you, you can support those doing this tremendous work and in turn help God’s Word be heard!
Prayerfully Consider How to Help Missionaries
Perhaps you know individuals within your church body who are planning to do mission work or your church has a missionary or missions agency they support. You may choose to join in financially supporting those individuals with your congregation. However, if this is not the case, research different mission agencies and pray about which you should support and how much of a financial commitment you should and can make.
Support in Prayer
Add your missionaries to your daily prayer list. Remember that as you go about your day and require God’s strength to make it through, they require the same as they are often faced head on with indifference and may even face persecution as they pursue God’s purpose for their lives.
Satan tempts them to flee foreign lands, which would leave God’s Word unspoken and unheard. They encounter rejection many of us never experience as a result of our faith and can become overwhelmed by loneliness.
Lift missionaries up to God in prayer, asking that he bless their travels, comfort and strengthen them, fill them with the spirit, give them the courage to witness, guard their hearts, minds and bodies, pray for their families, and for God’s Word to be proclaimed and Christ received by those who hear it.
Faithful Fundraising
While a monthly commitment is the standard for supporting missionaries financially, make it a point to step outside of your monthly commitment from time to time and raise a larger sum of money to invest in your missionary or give to a mission agency to use as they have need.
Some great fundraising ideas include:
- Church carwashes
- Bake sales
- Hosting a Banquet (breakfast, brunch or dinner)
- Sales of Christian items, such as t-shirts and books
- Sales of tickets to local restaurants, theaters or attractions
- Benefit concerts
- Catalog company sales
Be creative and have fun coming up with ways to support your missionaries and others will want to get involved as well.
Be a Friend to Your Missionary
Get to know your missionary or an agency’s multiple missionaries by staying up to date with their missions and accomplishments. Write letters to send and allow children to participate by creating cards. Send gifts for holidays, as many missionaries are away from their families during these special times of the year as well. These small acts of kindness will encourage your missionary, and hearing from them allows you to learn of their progress and feel confident that your support of them is well worth it and appreciated.
Make Missionaries Known
As you get to know a particular missionary or many through an agency, share their stories with others and spread the word of what God is doing through them. Others may feel compelled to offer support of some kind to the same missionaries or agencies once they’ve heard of them. Truthfully, many individuals have little knowledge of the importance of missionary work and don’t realize how spiritually starved those in other parts of the world are. Make them aware so they can assist in getting those individuals spiritually feed!
Remember that every bit of aid and support you give to missionaries glorifies God and allows them to do his will and build his kingdom!
